As many of us are aware of the benefits of CBD, did you know that it can also be used to treat similar conditions in pets? CBD, the non-psychoactive ingredient found in all cannabis plants (hemp and marijuana) has been associated with helping to alleviate pain, stress, and anxiety as well as numerous other ailments. So, you may be asking yourself, why would my pet need CBD?
With the 4th of July just around the corner, it can be a very stressful time for those furry family members. Fireworks because of their loud sounds, can trigger high levels of stress and anxiety in animals. The sudden, loud, earth shaking sounds can release adrenaline and stress hormones, triggering your pets fight or flight response. As a result, many pets go missing during this time of year.
Dr. Adam Christman, an award-winning veterinarian from New Jersey said there’s a lot of evidence showing benefits of CBD for pets. Although there isn’t much research being done on CBD and the effects it has on animals, there is a brief study that was conducted by Cornell University in 2017. This study found that CBD helped to increase comfort and activity in dogs with osteoarthritis. Christman said, “The results seem to support anecdotal reports of CBD oil’s benefits for pain and anxiety.”
It is thought that CBD’s sedating and calming effects are what may help animals with the anxiety caused by fireworks, thunderstorms, large crowds, and even car rides. As always, we suggest checking with your pets veterinarian before starting any kind of CBD regimen, as CBD can react with each pet differently.
