Melatonin is a hormone produced naturally by the pineal gland; a pea sized glad found just above the middle of the brain. This gland is responsible for your circadian rhythm (also called your sleep-wake cycle). The pineal gland lets your body know when it’s time to sleep by increasing levels at night, thus helping you fall asleep. When the sun comes up, those levels drop helping your body wake naturally.
Why Take Melatonin?
For some people, their bodies do not produce enough melatonin, or it produces too much. Both of which can be troublesome for people who suffer from insomnia, jet lag, or even those working a third shift job. Since the sleep/wake cycle is thrown off due to being up at night when the body naturally wants to rest, it can be difficult to fall asleep while the sun is up. For that reason, many people turn to natural supplements such as melatonin to help fall asleep and get a more restful night’s sleep.
Is it Safe?
For most people a standard dose is somewhere between 0.2 and 5mg, which is considered safe by most standards. However, standard doses can range anywhere between 1 and 10mg. Melatonin should not be taken for an extended period of time, or in large doses. Too large of a dose (30+mg) could be harmful. Users of melatonin find that excess doses can cause headache, dizziness, , daytime sleepiness, crankiness, stomach discomfort, and even short-lived . It is also advised that young children should avoid melatonin use unless advised by a doctor.
This supplement can also have a negative effect on people using medications such as anticoagulants, immunosuppressants, birth control, and diabetes medications. It is always best to consult a doctor when deciding whether or not you want to use melatonin and are on any kind of medications. Also, surprisingly enough synthetic forms of melatonin are better for you than the natural kind as natural melatonin can contain viruses or bacteria.
So, you may be asking yourself, why are we talking about melatonin? Well, it just so happens that melatonin is an ingredient found in our Night (Rest) Capsules. These capsules are made with 5 simple ingredients; 5-HTP, Melatonin, GABA, BCAA’s, and Pure CBD.
Since CBD works to activate receptors found naturally throughout the endocannabinoid system, it is thought that using natural supplements in conjunction with CBD, can help to increase the effectiveness of those supplements, in much smaller doses. This means less of a dose may be needed to find the same effect.
